INTRODUCTION: A. The way to heaven is straight and narrow. 1. Matthew 7:13,14 - “Enter ye in by the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many are they that enter in thereby. For narrow is the gate, and straitened the way, that leadeth unto life, and few are they that find it.” B. Wrong ways may seem right to those who do not know nor believe the truth. 1. Proverbs 14:12 - “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death.” 2. Proverbs 16:25 - “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” C. There is a way revealed in the Bible which is right and cannot be wrong. It is the way of peace and unity. 1. John 17:20,21 - “Neither for these only do I pray, but for them also that believe on me through their word; that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us: that the world may believe that thou didst send me.” 2. I Corinthians 1:10 - “Now I beseech you, brethren, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” 3. Romans 14:19 - “So then let us follow after things which make for peace, and things whereby we may edify one another.” I. THE FOLLOWING CANNOT BE WRONG. A. It cannot be wrong to accept the Bible as an infallible and all-sufficient guide in all matters of religion. 1. II Timothy 3:15-17 - “And that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness: that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.” 2. II Peter 1:3 - “Seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue.” B. Faith in Christ as the Son of God cannot be wrong. 1. Matthew 16:13-18 2. Acts 2:36-41 C. It cannot be wrong for sinners to repent of all sin. 1. II Peter 3:9 - “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2. II Corinthians 7:10 - “For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” 3. Acts 3:19 - “Repent ye therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that so there may come season of refreshing from the presence of the Lord.” 4. Acts 17:30 - “The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent.” D. It cannot be wrong to be baptized upon a confession of faith in Christ to become simply a member of the Lord’s church. 1. Mark 16:15-16 - “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” 2. Acts 2:37-41, 47 3. Acts 8:36-39 - “And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing.” E. It cannot be wrong to baptize penitent believers, rather than unbelieving infants. F. It cannot be wrong for proper subjects to be immersed -- buried and raised -- in baptism. 1. Romans 6:3-5 - “Or are ye ignorant that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.” 2. Colossians 2:12 - “Having been buried with him in baptism, wherein ye were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.” G. It cannot be wrong to wear the name of Christ, the name “Christian” rather than wear names given by men. (denominational names) 1. I Peter 4:14-16 - “If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are ye; because the Spirit of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you. For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other man’s matters: but if a man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.” 2. Acts 11:26 - “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch, and it came to pass, that even for a whole year they were gathered together with the church, and taught much people; and that the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” 3. Acts 26:28 - “And Agrippa said unto Paul, with but little persuasion thou wouldest fain make me a Christian.” 4. James 2:7 - “Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which ye are called?” H. It cannot be wrong to obey Christ in all things. 1. Acts 3:22,23 - “Moses indeed said, A prophet shall the Lord God raise up unto you from among your brethren, like unto me; to him shall ye hearken in all things whatsoever he shall speak unto you. And it shall be, that every soul that shall not hearken to that prophet, shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.” 2. Hebrews 5:8,9 - “Though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation.” 3. Luke 6:46 - “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” 4. I John 2:3,4 - “And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” I. Faithful attendance at all services of the church cannot be wrong. 1. Hebrews 10:24,25 - “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh.” 2. I Corinthians 14:23 - “If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?” [whole church gathered together] J. It cannot be wrong for all the members of the church to liberally and cheerfully give according to their purpose of heart and prosperity. 1. II Corinthians 9:5-8 - “I thought it necessary therefore to entreat the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your aforepromised bounty, that the same might be ready as a matter of bounty, and not of extortion. But this I say, he that soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he that soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Let each man do according as he that purposed in his heart: not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound unto you; that ye having always all sufficiency in everything, may abound unto every good work:” 2. I Corinthians 16:1-3 - “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I gave order to the churches of Galatia, so also do ye. Upon the first day of the week let each one of you lay by him in store, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come. And when I arrive, whomsoever ye shall approve, them will I send with letter to carry your bounty unto Jerusalem.” 3. Matthew 6:19,20 - “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.” 4. Hebrews 13:16 - “But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” K. It cannot be wrong to sing the praise of God in song without instruments of music. 1. I Corinthians 14:15 - “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.” 2. Ephesians 5:18,19 - “And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit; speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.” 3. Colossians 3:16 - “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.” 4. Hebrews 2:12 - “Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the congregation will I sing thy praise.” L. It cannot be wrong to eat the Lord’s Supper upon the first day of every week as the early Christian did. 1. Acts 2:42 - “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers.” 2. Acts 20:7 - “And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and prolonged his speech untilmidnight.” 3. I Corinthians 11:20-34; (16:2 - first day) M. Earnest, fervent prayers cannot be wrong in Christian worship. 1. Acts 2:42 - “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers.” 2. Acts 12:12 - “And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together and were praying.” 3. I Thessalonians 5:17 - “Pray without ceasing.” N. It cannot be wrong to be pure in heart and clean in life. 1. Matthew 5:8 - “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” 2. Titus 2:11-14 - “For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world; looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works.” 3. Romans 12:1,2 - “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” 4. Galatians 5:19-24 O. It cannot be wrong for all to try to convert the world to Christ. 1. I Corinthians 9:22 - “To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak: I am become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some.” 2. II Corinthians 5:11 - “Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest unto God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.” 3. Acts 26:29 - “And Paul said, I would to God, that whether with little or with much, not thou only, but also all that hear me this day, might become such as I am, except these bonds.” 4. Proverbs 11:30 - “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that is wise winneth souls.” P. Each of the foregoing items has to do with pure primitive Christianity. Let us call the world back to these principles and back to the Bible. 1. Jude 3 - “Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints.” |
