The Bible

INTRODUCTION:

  A.  The Book that stirs poets to their highest thoughts, that gives artists the most lasting scenes, that controls sculptors hands, that has brought about the most beautiful songs.

  B.  The same Book demands attention from world’s greatest intellects and is the source-book for the best literature that man can write.

  C.  This Book makes bad men good. It is the greatest moralizing force in existence. At the same time it tells the sweetest and most enthralling stories imagined.

  D.  This Book reveals the grandest character ever in flesh, the only perfect man.

  E.  Answers to man’s greatest and gravest questions are found in “the perfect law.”

  F.  No generation ever gets beyond the Bible; ever-fresh.

  G.  Since this Book is the greatest and guides people in the right way, we need to know all we can about it.

  I.  THE BIBLE’S ORIGIN

  A.  Inspired - II Timothy 3:16 - “Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness.”

  B.  Holy Spirit - John 16:13 - “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.”

  C.  Holy men - II Peter 1:21 - “For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.”

  D.  Unity amid diversity.

    1.  A striking quality of the bible is, in the midst of endless diversity, an amazing unity.

    2.  Its diversity is seen in its sixty-six parts, written by about thirty-six authors, many unknown to each other, living under different governments, in three languages, over a period of 1500 years.

    3.  Yet when these writings are placed together, their oneness is astounding.

    4.  The chief unity in the Scriptures is Jesus.

  E.  One great mind had to direct them all.

II. THE BIBLE’S PURPOSE.

  A.  Keeps from sin - Psalm 119:11 - “Thy word have I laid up in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

  B.  Lights our way - Psalm 119:105 - “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and light unto my path.”

  C.  Enlightens us - II Timothy 3:15 - “And that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

  D.  Instructs us - II Timothy 3:16-17 - “Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness: that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.”

  E.  Purifies us - I Peter 1:22 - “Seeing ye have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth unto unfeigned love of the brethren, love one another from the heart fervently.”

  F.  Frees us - John 8:32 - “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

  G.  Saves us - “James 1:21 - “Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”

III. THE BIBLE’S COMPLETENESS.

  A.  All truth - John 16:13 - “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.”

  B.  All things - “II Peter 1:3 - “Seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue.”

  C.  Whole counsel - Acts 20:27 - “For I shrank not from declaring unto you the whole counsel of God.”

IV. THE BIBLE’S INDESTRUCTIBILITY

  A.  Lasts forever - Matthew 24:35 - “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

I Peter 1:25 - “But the word of the Lord abideth forever. And this is the word of good tidings which was preached unto you.”

V.  THE BIBLE WARNS.

  A.  Do not add to nor subtract from - Deuteronomy - 4:2 - “Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of Jehovah your God which I command you.”

Proverbs 30:6 - “Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.”

Revelation 22:18-19 - “I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto him the plagues which are written in this book: and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book.”

  B.  Do not substitute human ideas - Mark 7:7-9 - “But in vain do they worship me, teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men. Ye leave     the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men. And he said unto them, full well do ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your tradition.”

  C.  Preach and teach only God’s word - II Timothy 4:2 - “Preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”

I Peter 4:11 - “If any man speaketh, speaking as it were oracles of God; if any man ministereth, ministering as of the strength which God supplieth; that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen”

  D.  Believe no other Gospel - Galatians 1:6-8 - “I marvel that ye are so quickly removing from him that called you in the grace of Christ unto a different gospel; which is not another gospel only there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach unto you any gospel other than that which we preached unto you, let him be anathema.”

VI. THE BIBLE ANSWERS THREE QUESTIONS.

  A.  The origin of life - Where did I come from?

  B.  The purpose of life - Why am I here?

  C.  After death, What then? - Where am I going?

VII. THE BIBLE CONTAINS

  A.  The mind of God.

  B.  The state of man.

  C.  The way of salvation.

  D.  The happiness of believers.

  E.  The doom of sinners.

CONCLUSION:

  A.  The Bible has much in it. It tells us of God and what he wants us to do to be saved. If we will be true to the word of God and walk in its truths, we can be saved.

  B.  The invitation song is for you and me to check out ourselves, to see if we are right with God. And if we are not, the opportunity is now for us to make things right. Won’t you come as we stand and sing.
